Germany/Mosel Vintages Flashcards
Mosel vintage 2021
Wetter colder vintage. Cooler weather delayed harvest, so higher Pradikat wines. Regular wines are sleek, elegant, & finessed. Dessert wines have generous sweeteness & there was Eiswein produced.
Mosel vintage 2020
Warm sunny year compared to recent hot vintages. Led to lighter brighter wines. Yields were affected by frost & drought. Classic Mosel wines for the dry wnes, but little botrytis & few made a Pradikat wine past Auslese. So if it’s ice wine or similar, it probably isn’t 2020.
Mosel vintage 2019
Hot dry vintage with an early start. Cool weather in autumn helped maintain acid structures. White wines have bright generous fruit with notable acidic tension. Dessert wines may be riper than expected for their Pradikat. Little Eiswein produced. Very solid year.
Mosel vintage 2018
Bountiful vintage. One of the hottest & driest summers on record. White wines are ripe & expressive, but have diminished acidity. Dessert wines are pure with little botrytis. Some Eiswein was produced.
Mosel vintage 2017
Small & early vintage. Frost in April & hail damage reduced yields by 30%. Summer was warm & dry, but heavy rainstorms induced botrytis. Earliest harvest on record. White wines vary, but many are concentrated & ripe with elevated acidity. Dessert wines ample botrytis allowed for vibrant & ageworthy noble sweet wines. No Eiswein though!
Mosel vintage 2016
White wines are variable with a tendency for ripe flavors, diminished alcohol, & balanced acidity. Dessert wines many Eisweins & a few noble sweet wines produced.
Mosel Vintage 2015
Hot dry summer led to small berries. Great conditions allowed later harvest without losing acidity. White wines are rich & powerful with elevated acidity. Dessert wines Noble sweet wines are ageworthy & balanced despite low levels of botrytis. Little Eiswein produced.
Mosel Vintage 2014
Cool rainy year. Budbreak was early. Rain in October induced rot & botrytis & meant sorting was required. White Wines are variable. Some light with racy acidity, but others impacted by botrytis. Dessert wines wierdly enough, few noble sweet wines produced despite the botyrtis & no Eiswein!
Mosel Vintage 2013
Difficult & small harvest. Variable quality. No Eiswein. Small quantities of noble sweet wines despite plenty of botrytis.
Mosel Vintage 2012
rain in the first half of the season led to downy mildew & poor fruit set. I deal autumn conditions allowed for harvest of healthy grapes with plenty opf acidity in November. So good but small. White wines are fruity & ageworthy with elevated acid. Dessert wines. Fe noble wines produced. Concentration was from dehydration, not botryti. Some Eiswein produced.
