Supply ships were stopped by Britain getting to Germany, causing shortages of food, clothing and medicines.
1915 - 500 women gathered outside parliament wanting their men back
1916 - 10,000 workers assembled in Berlin

What was the impact of WW1?

A

By 1918 Germany was close to collapse, short of food and deadly flu spreading. General Ludendorff advised they could never win and to become democratic by letting more parties to form a government and share his power, which he reluctantly did. This did not satisfy the public and demonstrations were held.

A

had to pay cost of war/reparations (£6.6 billion), only small army (100,000 soldiers, 6 battleships, no submarines or tanks, airforce), hand over its colonies, areas of germany used to create new countries, never reunite w austria, no german soldiers in rhineland
germany not allowed to negotiate and told to accept or be invaded (signed June 28 1919)

What were the german reactions to the t of v?

A

hated for 3 main reasons - felt it was too harsh because it took away large areas of land (people lost jobs/money) and so felt humiliated and angry
hated it had been forced on them (diktat)
felt they could have won the war but ‘november criminals’ had signed too quickly
