PGI Wine in Germany - Typcially light bodied and dry to off dry
Qualitatswein
PDO wines most come from one of the 13 wine regions in Germany and achieve higher level of grape ripeness than Landwein
Pradikatswein
PDO - Higher level of sugar is required in grapes than Qualitatswein
Grapes must come from a single region
Six categories within Pradikatswein classified sugar levels
Kabinett
Lightest most delicate
Typcially light body with green fruit, citrus and floral aromas
Elswein (Icewine)
Made from grapes that have frozen on the vine
Fresh stone fruit, tropical fruit
Botrytis plays no role in Elswein
Specific conditions do not occur every year
Spatlese
Late Harvest
More concentrate flavours and fuller body than Kabinett from the ssame reguin with riper citrus and some stone fruit
Auslese
Slected Harvest
Made from carefully selected extra ripe bunches
Stone fruit, tropical fruit and dried fruits
Can be made dry (trocken) but most have sweetness
Beerenauslese/BA
Selected berry harvest
Made from selected bunches or berries that have been concentrated by botrytis
Trockenbeerenauslese/TBA
Selected dried berry harvest
Made from indiviudally selected berries that have been dried through the effect of botrytis
Trocken
Dry wine
Halbtrocken
Wine with some sweetness
