Otto Von Bismarck
Former Minister President of Prussia - He intercepted a letter between France and Prussia to inspire war in order to defeat France - Unified Germany
Nationalism
Used their national identity to encourage revolution - wanted freedom - common enemy
Nation-state
where citizens are similar according to culture (language, ethnicity, common descent, etc)
German Unification
Essentially accomplished an extension of Prussia and builds off the constant underlying concept of German Duality
Prussia
A former kingdom in north-central Europe including present-day northern Germany and northern Poland
Otto von Bismarck
The chancellor of Prussia from 1862 until 1871, when he became chancellor of Germany. He’s a nationalist, he led Prussia to victory against Austria (1866) and France (1870) and was responsible for the creation of the German Empire.
Franco-Prussian War
Jul 19, 1870 – May 10, 1871
Prussia won against France, which made Otto Von Bismarck look powerful to the rest of Europe
German Unification
Various independent German-speaking states unified to create a Germanic state. The state expanded with von Bismarck’s military exploits. Unification was complete by 1871 with the Prussian king, Wilhelm, named the first leader of Germany.
