This quote is Gerald accepting the Birling family. Because he is a Croft, the rivalling company to Birlings, he would expect them to be hostile. But because he finds them a suitable ally, he befriends them and tries to form a partnership between families by marrying Sheila.
“She looked young and fresh”…”she looked young and pretty”
This is Gerald’s comment on Eva when she donned the persona of Daisy Renton. It was her first time working as a prostitute, and he could tell as she was ‘unlike the hard faced women’ that were usually there.
“I made her go to Morgan terrace because I was sorry for her, and I didn’t like the idea of her going back to the palace bar. I didn’t ask for anything in return”
This quote shows Gerald’s kindness. He doesn’t want Eva to resort to prostitution so he gave her a place to stay over the summer. However, he also took advantage of her vulnerability and she resulted in becoming his mistress.
“It’s hard to say. I didn’t feel about her the way she felt about me”
This is Gerald’s answer to Sheila questioning her fiancé. The fact that he had a mistress when he was Sheila’s groom-to-be, means she would have her doubts about his commitment.
“Everything’s all right now, Sheila. How about this ring?”
This shows that Gerald is on the side of Mr and Mrs Birling. He believes that now Eva does not exist or is still alive, his actions had no consequences and he can live a happy life
