Gerald Croft Flashcards
The description of Gerald and the speech of his class
“An attractive chap about thirty, rather too manly to be a dandy but
very much the easy well-bred young man-about-town”
Implying that he is both high in society and high in intelligence
“Well, it came just at the right moment. That was clever of you,
Gerald.”
Is a capitalist however, doesn’t agree with everything that Mr Birling does.
“You couldn’t have done anything else” (sacking Eva Smith)
Uses his status in society to make them look good however, he doesn’t try to intimidate the inspector like Mr and Mrs Birling
“After all, y’know, we’re respectable citizens and not criminals”
Sexist tone within this quote and probably a little bit protective of Sheila
(about Sheila): “She’s obviously had about as much as she can stand”
Doesn’t believe that a woman should have to hear such things. Kind of like he wants to keep Sheila in her bubble
“Why should you [stay]? It’s bound to be unpleasant and disturbing”
Not a very loyal man, was looking for pleasure not romance
“It’s a favourite haunt of women of the town”
Has sympathy for working class people, unlike most other upper class
‘[Daisy] gave me a glance that was nothing less than a cry for help”
A very nice gesture, in his head he thought he was doing a very nice act however in the end it could have hurt Eva even more.
“I insisted on Daisy moving into these rooms and I made her take some
money to keep her going there…I want you to understand that I didn’t
install her there so I could make love to her…I was sorry for her…I
didn’t ask for anything in return”
First thing he talks about is her looks, and then personality. Talks about the one-sided relationship
“She was young and pretty and warm-hearted- and intensely grateful. I
became at once the most important person in her life- you understand?”
He was getting her hopes her and letting her get attached.
“She told me she’d been happier than she’d ever been before”
Sees it as a common act however, most men wouldn’t have.
“Nearly any man would have done” (adored being ‘fairy prince’)
First to realise the hox about the inspector
“That man wasn’t a police officer…I’m almost certain”
Just like Sheila, Gerald is taking on aspects of the inspector
“But how do you know it’s the same girl? … We’ve no proof it was the
same photograph and therefore no proof it was the same girl”
Even after all that has happened, Gerald wanted things to go back to how they were before.
“Everything’s all right now Sheila. What about this ring?”
