Geothermal Flashcards
1
Q
What is geothermal Energy
A
Exploiting the large amount of heat under the earths surface to create steam which will drive a turbine.
2
Q
How is it the heat extracted from the ground
A
A bore hole is drilled deep into the ground and then cold liquid is pumped into the ground which displaces hot liquid gas to rise to the surface.
3
Q
Explain the key components of a heat pump
A
Water pipes are passed through an evaporator which transfers heat to a refrigerant. This then passes through compressor which changes the liquid to a gas and adds heat. This is then pumped to the condenser which transfers heat from the gas to the central heating system.
4
Q
Disadvantages of heat pumps
A
- Increased strain on electricity network with demand for heat pumps increasing
- Poor performance if incorrectly installed.
- ASHPs perform badly in cool or humid climates.
