Georgraphy Terms Flashcards
Longitude
Line that runs vertically.
Tells you how far a a place is from the Prime Meridian in east or west.
The amount of miles in longitude is always changing.
Equator
Runs through middle of the earth.
Has a 0 degree latitude. (Where latitude is found out from.)
Tropic of Cancer
Northern end of the The Tropics.
Above the Tropic of Capricorn
Latitude is 23.5 degrees north.
Tropic of Carpicorn
Southern end of The Tropics.
Below The Tropic of Cancer.
Latitude is 23.5 degrees South.
Arctic Circle
Line that separates the northern Temperate Zone from the Frigid Zone.
Latitude is 66.5 degrees north.
Antarctic Circle
Line that separates the southern Temperate Zone and Frigid Zone.
Latitude is 66.5 degrees south.
North Pole
Most northern part of the Earth.
Deep in the middle of the Frigid Zone.
South Pole
Southern most part of the Earth.
Deep in the middle of the frigid zone.
Climate
Patterns of weather. (Hot, cold, dry, or wet).
Earth rotation makes climate in all places on the planet. North and South Poles are darker for example.
Scale
The ratio of the space on the map to the space in real life.
What is the relationship between latitude and climate?
Latitude separates the climate zones.
The higher the latitude, the colder and the less sun.
Example: the North Pole has very little sun in the winter and is very cold. This is because it is very far from the Equator.
What would Antarctica look like on a Mercator Projection?
It becomes huge, extremely wide.
This is because a Mercator Projection doesn’t reflect how the lines of longitude converge at the poles.
Therefor, the distance between lines of longitude appear greater than they actually are.
Why do maps need scale?
Because we need to determine the relationship between the space on the map, and the world.
A map of the world in my room is not the real size of the world so I need a scale to determine the actual distances or else it’s use would be pointless.
Latitude
Line that runs horizontally.
Provides the location of a place north or south of the Equator.
1 degree of latitude is about equal to 70 miles.
