What is a state?
A
A form of authority. Exercise of territorial sovereignty. Unofficially marked by seat at UN

What is a nation?
A
A kind of community, homeland
- “people whose members are bound together by a sense of solidarity rooted in a historic attachment to a homeland” (Johnston et al, 2000)
- many nations aspire to statehood yet most do not attain it (indigenous groups etc)
- many nations may make up a state

Nation-state?
A
Ideal combination of nation and state whereby the boundaries of the nation directly map onto those of the state. Uncommon (Japan, Iceland, Portugal)

A
Many more nations to states. 500+ nations, 193 seats at UN

Relationships between nations and states?
A
Often complex and fractious e.g. UK Scottish independence (political not militaristic)

A
A political concept that is fundamentally about the state
