What is a nation?

A

A kind of community, homeland

  • “people whose members are bound together by a sense of solidarity rooted in a historic attachment to a homeland” (Johnston et al, 2000)
  • many nations aspire to statehood yet most do not attain it (indigenous groups etc)
  • many nations may make up a state

A

Ideal combination of nation and state whereby the boundaries of the nation directly map onto those of the state. Uncommon (Japan, Iceland, Portugal)
