Geomorphological Processes Flashcards
What are the three types of weathering?
Physical,Chemical,Biological
Give 2 examples of Physical weathering.
Rain
Wind
Give 2 examples of Chemical weathering.
Rust
Acid Rain
Give 2 examples of Biological weathering
Roots
Lichen
Humans
Animals
What is Physical weathering?
This is the breakdown of rock by mechanical means. This could be wetting and drying, heating and cooling, or freezing and thawing.
What is Freeze-Thaw weathering
This occurs when water gets into a crack in the rock, the it freezes and expands then thaws and contracs. After this happens lots it breaks down into skree (little bits of rock)
What is onion weathering
Onion skin weathering is another type of physical weathering. It happens in places where it is very hot in the day and cold at night, e.g. deserts. The rock expands in the heat of day time but contracts in the cold of night. The rock peels off in layers.
What is Chemical weathering
This is the breakdown of rock when some chemical change takes palce.
What is it called when acid in rainwater attacks limestone rock and dissolves it?
This is called carbonation.
What is Biological weathering
This is due to the actions of plants or animals/humans
What is Weathering
Weathering is the breakdown of rock in one place.
What is Erosion
Erosion is the breakdown and removal of rock.
What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Erosion is the breadown AND removal of rock, whereas, weathering is JUST the breakdown of rock.
