Geomorphic Processes Flashcards
1
Q
Define mass movement.
A
Any and all downhill movement of weathered material due to gravity.
2
Q
Define soil creep.
A
Common yet slow, moving 1-2cm per year, effects perceivable only over time.
3
Q
Define landslide.
A
Removal of vegetation (deforestation), potentially caused by heavy rain. Significant damage is very possible.
4
Q
Define mudflow.
A
High rainfall - steep slopes - deforestation. Heavy rain saturates soil, leading to greater mud flow downhill.
5
Q
Define lahar.
A
Volcanic ash mixing with thawed water, producing volcanic mudflow.
6
Q
Define rockfall.
A
Rocks falling down.
7
Q
Define the hydrological cycle.
A
The process of water moving around the Earth through the land, sea, and atmosphere.
