Geology Unit Flashcards
Inner core
Composition: Solid metal
Density: most dense
Thickness: 3rd thickest
Atmosphere
Thin layer/ blanket of gas that surrounds the planet
Outer core
Composition: liquid metal
Density: 2nd most dense
Thickness: 2nd thickest
Mantle
Composition: molten rock
Density: 3rd dense
Thickness: most thick
Crust
Composition: solid rock
Density: least dense
Thickness: least thick
Lithosphere
Composition: solid rock
-location of plates in the crust and upper-most part of the mantle.
Composition
What something is made of
Density
- mass divided by volume
- how much matter something has
- how compact atoms are
Plates
2 types: oceanic and continental
- They are always moving at a rate of a few centimeters to inches per year.
- They cover the entire planet
Magnetic field
The convention currents in outer core and the earths rotation are responsible for earths magnetic field
Convection currents
Cycle of currents and fluids that are caused by heat rising and falling
- in layers of earth it causes plate movement
Seismologist
Person who studies earthquakes
Plate tectonics
3 boundaries:
Transform
Divergent
Covergent
Seismic waves
3 types:
- Primary waves (longitudinal)
- secondary waves (transverse)
- surface wave (transverse)
Continental drift
- Earths continents were once together as a large mass (Pangea aka supercontinent) and slowly drifted away
- Plates are always moving a few cm to an inch per year
