geology-rivers Flashcards
what are the processes of erosion?
hydraulic action, attrition, abrasion, solution
what are the processes of transportation?
traction, suspension, saltation, solution
what is hydraulic action?
water and air is forced into cracks of a rock, breaking its structure
what is abrasion?
rock fragments carried by the river, hitting the banks causing them to wear down
what is attrition?
rock fragments transported by river which causes them to break into smaller rounded sediment
what is solution? (erosion)
rocks containing calcium carbonate
what is suspension?
small particles are carried within the water by turbulent flow
what is traction?
heavy material is rolled along the river bed, requires most energy
what is saltation?
sand-sized particles particles bounced along the river bed
what is solution? (transportation)
some minerals will dissolve in water and are carried
what is a meander?
the river bends in its middle course
what is the first step in forming a waterfall?
water flows over hard and soft rock
what is the second step in forming a waterfall?
soft rock is eroded by water- forms a small drop
what is the third step in forming a waterfall?
continued erosion of soft rock will undercut hard rock
what is the fourth step in forming a waterfall?
eroded rock creates hollow base of waterfall known as a plunge pool
what is the fifth step in a waterfall?
due to overhang, hard rock collapses, waterfall retreats forming gorge
how does flooding affect people?
- damage housing
- businesses
- damage to transportation
what are the rock types?
- igneous
- sedimentary
- metamorphic
what is igneous rock?
formed from volcanic eruptions, VERY RESISTANT, e.g. granite
what is sedimentary rock?
formed from eroded sediments deposited. some are resistant like limestone
what is metamorphic rock?
formed due to changing heat & pressure - makes it RESISTANT e.g. marble, slate
what is physical weathering?
caused by changes in temperature & pressure
what is chemical weathering?
caused by the action of water & chemicals
what is biological weathering?
caused by the action of plants & animals (either physical or chemical)
