Geology Flashcards
What are sedimentary rocks formed from
Particles that have been eroded over time and deposited into layers. A sedimentary rock could be sandstone. Or sedimentary rock can be formed from remains of plants and animals like chalk and limestone.
How is igneous rock formed?
Made from volcanic activity when magma cools forming rocks made of crystals. E.g. Granite and basalt
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Formed from other rocks changed by extreme pressure or heat. These rocks are very hard. E.g. Shale to slate or limestone to marble.
How is the UK landscape formed?
The UK landscape is formed from harder, more resistant rocks which have eroded at a much slower rate.
What happened 300million years ago in the U.K.
Molten magma raised through the earths surface under intense pressure.
What are lowland areas of the UK formed by
They are formed by softer, younger sedimentary rocks, which are less resistant to erosion.
What are the three rock types that are most common in the U.K.
Sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous
