Geology Flashcards
What is a sedimentary rock?
Formed by deposition of grains by ice, water and wind. Found in layers called strata, contains fossils e.g. Sandstone and limestone
What is an igneous rock?
Formed by cooling of molten magma, very hard with a crystalline structure e.g. Basalt and granite
What is a metamorphic rock?
Igneous or sedimentary rocks metamorphosed by heat and pressure within the earths crust e.g. Marble and slate
What is isostatic rebound?
When the ice melts, the pressure is lifted off the land and the land rises
What is a discordant coastline?
Geological trends are at right angles to the shore
Produces headland and bay topography
E.g. Southern Greece, west Ireland, Swanage bay
What is a concordant coastline?
Geological trends are parallel to the shore
Produces relatively straight rocky coastline, with a series of long narrow islands parallel to the coast
E.g. Dalmatian coast (Croatia), dorset coast
