Geological Time Flashcards
John Wesley Powell
realised the evidence of an ancient earth is concealed in its rocks, primarily the sedimentary
Relative dating
placing rocks in a sequence of formation
Numerical Dating
years that have passed since an event occurred.
Steno’s Law of Superposition
in an undeformed sequence of sedimentary rock, each bed is older than the one above it.
Steno’s Principle of Original Horizontality
sediments are deposited horizontally, tilted or folded layers used to be flat.
Steno’s Principle of Cross-Cutting Relationships
if a geological feature cuts across another, the one that cuts across must be younger than the one it cuts.
Uncomformities
interruption of the deposition of sediment. significant geological events in history. ex. ice age.
Angular Uncomformity
tilted or folded sedimentary rock that are overlain by more flatlying younger strata.
noncomformity
breaks seperate older metamorphic and igneous rock from younger sedimentary strata.
