Fossilisation and Fossil Record Flashcards
Trace Fossils
preserved impressions of biological activity. indicators of past sedimentary environments.
Coprolites
Fossilised animal feces. provide info on feeding habits and interaction of coexisting organisms.
Chemical Fossils
When some organisms decompose they leave a characteristic chemical signature. Indirect existence of past life.
Body Fossils
remains of living organisms, direct evidence of past life. Body fossils are not indicative of death because they could have been shed at some point during their life.
Chronostratigraphy
establishes age of rock sequences and their time relations. Relevant to dating geological events.
What is the fossil record bias towards?
Organisms with tissues resistant to decay.
Marine Organisms- erosion on land makes land organisms less preserved.
Organisms living in low energy environments
Abundant Organisms
