geography the sea Flashcards
sea
hydraulic action
the power of water when it crashes against the coast
compressed air
air in the rocks is trapped by the incoming waves and over time it builds up and makes the rocks shater
wave wind
speed of the wind
wave fetch
distance of the which the wind blows
a destructive wave is a
wave this a weak swash and strong backwash
a constructive wave is a ..
wave with a strong swash a weak backwash
when do these waves occur
destructive in winter and constructive in summer
what is longshore drift
it is when waves move up at an angle with the swash and back at an 90 degree angle with the backwash in a zig zag movement and over time sediments build up
longshore drift is A)deposition or B)erosion or C)transportation
C)transportation
explain bays and headlands
it is when soft and hard rock face the cost and the soft rock erodes faster causing a indent known as a bay and the pieces of hard rock sticking out is known as headlands it is a form of erosion
what is a tombolo
it is when 2 waves hit and the cancel out each other and loose energy , this causes deposition between the offshore island and the mainland over time it builds up connecting them. it is a feature o deposition
what is a rock armor/boulders
rock armor is a large boulder placed at the bottom of sand dunes or cliffs to prevent the erosive power of waves
what are sea walls
sea walls are walls build at the back of beaches to protect costal towns or areas of high economic value from the sea, the walls are usually curved or sloped at the top, this forces the wave to break back on the next incoming wave thus breaking its power
