Geography oil sands Flashcards
What is conditioning ?
Process of separating sand and bitumen and breaks apart any large piees of oil sands . Oil sand is miwed with warm water called a slurry and is transported by pipeline to an extraction facility.
Separation
Process where sand sinks to the bottom and impure bitumen rises to the top.
Oil sand
naturally occuring mixture of sand, clay or other minerals, and bitumen which is a heavy viscous oil that must be treated before it can be used by refineries to produce usable fuels such as gasoline and diesel.
environmental consequences of oil sand mining.
Environmental impact includes habitat destruction, water use and contamination, air pollution, and the risk of tailings pond leaks.
Human consequences of oil sand mining
Health impacts involve poor air and water quality, potentially leading to respiratory issues and other health problems.
Indigenous communities face land use conflicts, health risks, and cultural disruptions.
Oil sand mining contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.
Economic impacts include employment opportunities but also economic dependence and vulnerability to market fluctuations.
how does oil sand mining work
Oil sand mining involves extracting bitumen-rich sands from the ground using open-pit or in-situ methods. The extracted sands are transported to extraction plants, where they’re processed into a slurry and separated to isolate the bitumen. The bitumen undergoes upgrading to convert it into lighter crude oil, which is then refined into petroleum products
