Geography/ Geology/ Soils Flashcards
What soils dominate the vineyards of the Jura?
Clay-rich marl from the late Triassic and limestone from the Jurassic period (208-150mya) dominate the soils of the Jura.
What is the terrain like in each of the three parts of the Savoie ?
The region around Lac Léman is glacially carved
The region around Lac Bourget is steep hilly terrain
Hilly terrain of Massif de Bauges S/SE of Chambery.
What is the soil composition of the Massif des Bauges in the crus of Montmelian/ Arbin/ Cruet/ St. Jean-de-la-Porte and Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré?
The soil around the crus of Montmelian/ Arbin/ Cruet/ St. Jean-de-la-Porte and Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré in the south are composed of dark Jurassic limestone, black marl with alluvium pebbles over the top.
What is the soil composition of the Savoie region?
There is a great diversity of soil types in Savoie.
Mostly lime-rich glacial material and scree, : Moraines (glacial deposits),
Alluvial soils
River terraces (river stone over clay)
Terraced steep limestone scree slopes
Sedimentary soils of shale, sandstone forming the Molasse Basin
