Geography, Geographical Investigation Flashcards
Advantages and disadvantages of Primary data
Advantages
– Know what data is reliable and valid
– Can conduct a pilot study
– Collect the data that you need
– Can collect as much data as required
Disadvantages
– Don’t have access to the proper recourses
– Can be very time consuming
Advantages and disadvantages of Secondary data
Advantages
–Doesn’t take long to collect
– Take data from the past
–Some can be valid (e.g. Government collected) data
– May give you an average
–Accurate (e.g. large samples)
Disadvantages
– Don’t know where it’s come from and how reliable it is
– Might have no relevant data
– Data can be overcomplicated
–Don’t have a full understanding of what the data set is showing
– Out of date
What are the sampling methods, and when do we use them.
Convenience (selects participants that are available around a region)
– Doing qualitative research
Simple random
– When whole population is available
Systematic sampling ( every nth person)
– When a stream of representative people are available (e.g. in the street)
Guidelines for formulating surveys/interviews
– short and simple
– in logical order
– pre-defined answers can be given to guide the participant
– make it neat and orderly
