geography external revision Flashcards
what are the levels of economic development
LEDC vs MECD
what is vulnerability and risk
vulnerability - weakness in something that leaves open to hazard
risk - a situation that involves danger/ the event itself
geographical hazard?
occurs within the earth
e.g. volcanic eruption, earthquake
geomorphic hazards?
on the surface of the earth
e.g. landslides/ avalanches, flooding
atmospheric hazard?
in the atmosphere
e.g.cyclone, drought, wildfire, tornado
BOLTSS
border, orientation, legend, title, scale, source
whats a natural hazard
physical process that has the potential to cause damage to human communities
whats a natural disaster?
the events following an actual occurence of a natural hazard
what factors impact vulnerability
physical (weather/season)
economical (preparedness, mitigation - can be expensive)
social and political (social structures are important for recovery)
where do these hazards usually occur: earthquake vs cyclone
earthquake - likley around tectonic plate boundaries (japan, indonesia, papua new guinae)
cyclones - occur between 5 and 30 degrees latitude
what changes the impact of hazards
- speed of onset
- magnitude
- frequency
- duration
- temporal spacing
- preparedness
- predictability
