Geography deck 3 Flashcards
Unit 2 Part 1
What are landform regions and why are they important?
areas with similar physical features like mountains or plains. They help us understand geography and the environment.
What is the difference between climate change and global warming?
long-term changes in weather patterns. Global warming is the rise in Earth’s temperature due to human activities.
What are the impacts of climate change?
rising sea levels, stronger storms, and disruptions to nature and human life.
How can we save our planet through adaptation, mitigation, and geoengineering?
adjusting to climate change, mitigation is reducing pollution, and geoengineering is using technology to fix climate problems.
What is the rock cycle?
how rocks change from one type to another over time (e.g., from igneous to sedimentary).
What is plate tectonics?
theory that Earth’s surface is made of moving plates, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains.
What’s the difference between climate and weather?
long-term weather in an area, while weather is the short-term conditions.
What does L.O.W.E.R.N. stand for?
Latitude, Ocean currents, Wind, Elevation, Relief, and Nearness to water
What are the types of climate?
maritime (wet and mild), continental (cold winters, hot summers), and modified continental (a mix of both).
What is a positive feedback loop?
when a change causes more of the same change, like melting ice causing more warming and more ice to melt.
What are types of extreme weather events?
hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, and heatwaves.
How does the positive feedback loop apply to Arctic glaciers?
Melting Arctic ice reduces ice cover, absorbs more heat, and melts more ice, speeding up the process.
What is the Paris Agreement?
global pact to limit warming to 2°C by reducing pollution and adapting to climate change.
How do you read and interpret a climate graph?
Look at the temperature range (difference between highest and lowest) and the average rainfall to figure out the climate type.
How do you calculate elevation?
Insert equation
