Give 3 negatives of the One Child Policy
Shrinking workforce, 400 million babies prevented or killed, 4:2:1 problem
What is the 4:2:1 problem?
The 4:2:1 problem is where there is only one child to look after their parents and their two sets of grandparents because of the One Child Policy
Why was the One Child Policy introduced?
There was a famine meaning that they didn’t have enough food and resources to keep feeding more children which obviously meant that they had to decrease the birth rate one way or another.
Why was the One Child Policy changed to a 2 child policy in 2015 and later into a 3 child policy in 2021?
The reason for this was because China was slowly becoming an ageing population which meant that the country wasn’t becoming rich. However, after the One Child Policy, families realized the cost of raising children and many families can’t afford to have a second or third child
Why did the government allow foreigners to adopt Chinese baby girls?
The government allowed foreigners to adopt baby girls because they knew they were making money
Name 2 incentives the government used to ensure mothers followed the rules
Cheaper childcare, housing benefits and a pay rise
What is the definition of an immigrant?
An immigrant is somebody coming to live permanently in another place
What were conditions in factory dorms like?
7 people were crammed into a dorm, the conditions were unhygienic and unacceptable.
Why did 18 people commit suicide in 2010?
The factory conditions were so bad and the pay was incredible low, working at around 30p an hour. The workers were burnt out and couldn’t keep working any longer.
Why was China a good place to set up factories?
China was a good place to set up factories because the health and safety conditions were poor meaning they could focus on selling their products and earning a profit rather than paying their workers a decent amount. China is a coastal location meaning it can easily import and export products to different countries. Chinese government is making it cheaper to build factories. China has a large population meaning it can sell products to China’s large population. Because of rural to urban migration, there are a lot of people in need of jobs and working in factories is the easiest job to get into for migrants.
