Geography Challenge of Natural Hazards Flashcards
What are the 4 FACTORS that can affect the HAZARD RISK?
Urbanisation
Farming
Climate Change
Poverty
What is a NATURAL HAZARD?
When a natural event comes into contact with people and their daily lives
What are some TYPES of a NATURAL HAZARD?
Earthquakes
Eruptions
Floods
Droughts
Hurricanes
Tornadoes
What is the PLATE TECTONIC THEORY?
The Earth has 4 distinct layers. Outer crust-Larger mantle-Outer core-Inner core.
The crust is split up into tectonic plates (continent/ocean sized) that ‘float’ on the mantle and move slowly. Points of contact is where we have tectonic activity.
Describe the Distribution of TECTONIC HAZARDS
The Earths crust is split into plates which move due to convection currents. At plate margins tectonic hazards are found and often occur in lines along costal areas.
What is a CONSTRUCTIVE PLATE MARGIN? Name an example
Plates that move apart due to convection currents (often under the ocean). Magma rises to fill these gaps and creates under sea mountains and volcanoes which eventually reaches the surface and forms islands and volcanoes like ICELAND. An example is the EURASIAN and NORTH AMERICAN PLATE.
What is a DESTRUCTIVE PLATE MARGIN? Name an example
Plates that slowly move towards each other (usually oceanic and continental plates). Oceanic plates are denser and subducts underneath the continental plates which causes earthquakes. Subducted plate melts and magma pushes up to surface creating volcanoes. An example is the NAZCA and SOUTH AMERICAN PLATE.
What is a CONSERVATIVE PLATE MARGIN? Name an example
Plates that move past each other which causes earthquakes. No volcanoes because no magma is involved. An example is the SAN-ANDREAS FAULT, CALIFORNIA.
