Challenges of Natural Hazards: Tectonic Areas Flashcards
Why would people live in a TECTONIC AREA?
Better monitoring of hazards make people feel safer.
Plate margins coincide with favourable areas like ports and costal areas.
Volcanic benefits like fertile soil, geothermal energy and money from tourism .
How has this benefitted ICELAND?
Hot water from crust provides 90% of Iceland’s buildings.
Thousands of tourists visited after the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull.
Geothermal energy is used to create 25% of Iceland’s electricity.
How can we reduce the RISK of TECTONIC HAZARDS?
MONITORING- May be changes in water pressure or minor tremors beforehand.
PROTECTION- Reinforcing walls, regular quake drills, and shock absorbers in foundations of buildings.
PLANNING- Maps produced to show effects of earthquakes which allows high value land like hospitals cam be protected.
