Geography (Atmosphere, climate zones) Flashcards
5 layers of atmosphere and their functions (Inner to outer)
- Troposhere (Most inner, weather is formed here)
- Statosphere (O zone layer, protects us from harmful UV rays)
- Mesosphere (Coldest, meteorites break apart here)
- Thermosphere (Hottest, deep as all other 5 combined)
- Exosphere (Fades into space, satellites here)
How does altitude change temperature
higher you go, air particles further you go. Colder. Less air to exert pressure, fewer molecules to absorb or retain heat.
How do clouds affect temperature
Day: reflect heat
Night: trap radiating heat
what is relative humidity
ratio of actual water vapor in air compared to max amount of vapor unit of air can hold
what is saturation point
air mass turns full or saturated, dew point, we see precipitation
3 types of rainfall
convectional, frontal, orographic (relief rain)
sea breeze VS land breeze
at day, warm air goes from land, cold air goes from ocean. SEA BREEZE
at night, warm air goes from sea, cold air goes from land. LAND BREEZE
what is ITCZ
Intertropical Convergence Zone. Belt of converging trade winds. Cloudy north and south
what is the DOLDRUMS
calm oceanic regions
what is the coriolis effect
deflection of air currents due to earths rotation
