Geography Flashcards
What are the 3 types of renewable resources?
Fresh air - so we can have oxygen to breathe.
Fresh water - to keep us alive
Plants and animals - to use for food.
How do humans impact the water cycle?
Humans impact the water cycle by building structures, such as levee banks, to protect farmland, and settlements from flooding.
How much of the World’s water is fresh?
3% of the World’s water is fresh.
What is water scarcity?
Water scarcity occurs when the demand for water exceeds the amount availabe.
What is water stress?
Water stress is the negative effect of limited water supply on people and environments.
What is a chatchment?
It is the area drained by a river and its tributaries.
What is Watershed?
The boundary between catchments.
What is Groundwater?
Groundwater is water beneath the earth held in pores or tiny spaces of sand, soil or rock.
What is Watertable?
Watertable is the level at which under-rock strata are saturated by water.
What is irrigation?
Irrigation is watering crops by artificial.
What is the difference between a catchment and a watershed?
A catchment is the area of the land where the surface water meets and the watershed is separating neighboring catchments.
Why are catchments important?
Catchments are important because they are where all our food is grown and where our drinking water comes from.
Why do rivers continue to flow even after it has stopped raining?
When precipitation falls to the ground, water moves over the land and finds it way into streams or down into the ground.
How can you reduce your water usage?
- Taking short showers
- Turning of the tap when cleaning your teeth.
- Installing water-saving household appliances, shower heads and toilets.
How many dams does Australia have and how much water do they hold?
Australia has 447 dams and they hold nearly 84000 GL.
What is the water stored in Australia dams primarily used for?
The water run-off needs to be collected and stored in dams, moved to where it is needed and used with care in drier times.
How is groundwater accessed for human use?
It can be accessed in the place where it is needed. There is no need for expensive infrastructure such as pipes to transport water.
What is groundwater used for?
Groundwater is used for agricultural, domestic and industrial purposes.
How many people in the world rely on Groundwater?
2.2 billion people
How much of Australia’s water use comes from groundwater?
15%
Describe the water cycle?
When rain goes into the ground and moves underground, it goes to the clouds or the ocean and falls out of the clouds and make rain.
Describe the different ways Water is collected, stored and used in Australia.
By dams or wells to catch rain water or collect groundwater from wells.
Describe the different ways water is collected, and used in another country you have studied.
In Africa they collect water from oceans or the pipelines.
What effects can water quality have on humans?
It can lead to diseases such and trachoma ( Which can lead to blindness) and plague.
