Geography Flashcards
Non-renewable resource
Non-renewable resources are those that cannot be replaced in a short time. For example, fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas are non-renewable because they take thousands of years to be replaced.
Renewable resource
Renewable resources are those that can be replaced in a short time. For example, solar energy is a renewable resource that can be used for heating water or generating electricity. It is never used up and is constantly being replaced by the sun
Types of natural resources
non-renewable and renewable.
What is groundwater?
Water that is found under the earths surface
Artesian aquifer
an underground layer which holds groundwater under pressure.
Permeable
Allowing liquids or gases to pass through it.
What is ground water recharge?
When surface water seeps down & refills the aquifer
Green water
Water that is stored in the soil or that stays on top of the soil or in vegetation
Blue water
The water in fresh water lakes, rivers, wetlands and aquifers
Run-off
precipitation not absorbed by soil, and which runs over the land and into streams
Rainfall variability
the change from year to year in the amount of rainfall in a given location
Groundwater
Water that is stored in Artesian aquifers
Improved drinking water
water that is safe for human consumption
Water scarcity
a situation that occurs when the demand for water is greater than the supply available
Water stress
a situation that occurs in a country with less than 1000 cubic metres of renewable fresh water per person
