It measures precipitation by telling us how much water has fallen from the sky(as rain,snow,sleet and hale) we collect it in a container and measure the depth of the liquid in millimetres or centimetre a rain gauge is a container with a scale marked on it

It measures the air pressure by telling us the force pressing down on us because of the weight of air. If air pressure is rising it means air is sinking and vice versa. So this tells us what kind of weather to expect the measurement is took in millibars it is usually in the range 970 mb to 1040 mb
