Geography Flashcards
What tsunami had the highest death toll?
The tsunami with the highest death toll was the Boxing Day tsunami in Indonesia killing 230,000 people.
What is the global pattern of tsunamis?
Linear and peripheral (this means they are located in a line following fault lines and around the outside of the Pacific Ocean)
Where is the greatest number of tsunamis?
Around the Pacific Ocean near countries like Indonesia and Japan
What are the details of the tallest tsunami (location and height)?
The largest tsunami height recorded was in Lituya Bay, Alaska in 1958 with a height of 524m
What was the death toll of the Boxing Day Tsunami?
230,000
What caused the Boxing Day Tsunami?
A 9.2 earthquake North of Sumatra
How many countries did the Boxing Day Tsunami effect?
14
How are tsunamis created (long)?
Tsunamis work by there being a displacement in the water, usually an underwater earthquake like a thrust fault. This then creates waves one traveling into the deep ocean and the other toward a nearby coast. As the wave approaches shore it decreases in speed and increases in size, but the energy stays the same. When the tsunami eventually hits the shore it moves like a fast-moving flood rather than the stereotypic crest wave. Sometimes multiple waves hit, which is why the danger lingers for hours after the initial hit. When the wave is finally reflected into the ocean it drags debris with it sometimes causing even more damage.
How are tsunamis created (short)?
A displacement in the water causes a wave to travel into shore and it get bigger but not faster, when it hits the shore it acts like a flood (not a crest wave)
Where are tsunamis most active?
Around the ring of fire
What are the two main types of natural disaster?
Tectonic and Climate
What is the line of latitude through the middle of the Earth?
The equator
What is the line of longitude through the middle of the Earth?
The prime meridian
What are the compass points that latitude is measured in?
North and South
What are the compass points that longitude is measured in?
East and West
