Geography Flashcards
What are biomes?
Areas of our planet with similar climates, landscapes animals and plants.
What is an ecosystem?
A natural system that comprises a community of plants and animals that interact with each other and their physical environment.
What is adaptation?
When a plant or animal becomes better suited to its environment to improve its chances of survival.
Define indigenous.
Indigenous is a person / people who originate from a particular region or country who choose to remain living in their ancestral home.
Name two adaptations of plants in the rainforest.
- ) Buttress roots - large roots to support tall trees in shallow soils.
- ) Drip tips - plants have leaves with pointy tips. This allows water to run off leaves quickly without damaging or breaking them.
Explain the steps of the rainforest nutrient cycle.
Trees shed leaves all year round Decaying vegetation decomposes rapidly Nutrients enter the soil Shallow roots take up the nutrients Trees grow rapidly Aaaaand repeat.
What are three negative impacts of deforestation?
Soil erosion - land cleared of vegetation which causes the nutrient cycle to stop
Loss of biodiversity - plants / animals cannot survive in cleared areas
Climate change - fewer trees to absorb carbon dioxide
What are three threats to tropical rainforests?
- Farming
- Logging
- Mining
Where in the world are rainforests found?
Along or near the equator.
Order all of the rainforest layers from highest to lowest.
- The emergent layer
- The canopy layer
- The understory layer
- The forest floor
What is climate change?
Any change in global temperature or rainfall over times, due to natural or human activity.
What is the greenhouse effect?
When gases trap heat in the atmosphere, causing the world to warm up.
What is global warming?
The gradual warming up of the Earth’s atmosphere.
What are greenhouse gases?
Gases in the atmosphere that absorbs heat energy and prevents it from escaping into space.
What are three natural causes of climate change?
- The Orbital theory (change in orbit / tilt of the earth)
- The Sunspot theory (more / less sunspots on the sun)
- The Eruption theory (volcanic dust in the atmosphere cooling the world down)
