Geograpgy Flashcards
Three definitions of geography
- study of earth, its features and distribution of life on earth
- effects of human activity on environment & other humans
- physical characteristics of an area
6 key points of geography
Location Region Spatial pattern Spatial interaction Culture Human & environmental relationship
First key point
Location:
Absolute:
grid coordinates, address, longitude and latitude
Relative:
Use of land marks
Time reference
Compass direction
Second key point
Region:
A distinctive region defined by a set of characteristics
Ex Coastal regions Rainforests Parries Ethnic regions Cultural regions (religion, language)
Third key point
Spatial Pattern:
Why objects/places/things are placed in particular areas.
Ex
Cities are located (in north America) away from landfill sites.
Factories near resources
Fourth key point
Spatial interaction:
An event in one location can lead to a change in another location
Ex
Forest fire in fort mac caused poor air/hazy skies for neighboring provinces.
-disease can travel to other countries due to planes
Fifth key point
Culture:
Customs and views of a group of people
Can vary greatly within small regions
Ex. Rural vs urban
Sixth key point
Human & environmental relationship:
Impact humans have on environment and vice versa
Dependence: need natural resources
Adaption: we adapt to climate and land form
Modification: how we change environment to fit our needs ex. Canals for irrigation, cutting trees for buildings and stores, etc.
