Q

difference between oceanic and continental crust

A

oceanic crust in denser then continental crust therefore gets sub ducted by continental crust

Q

what are convection currents

A

heat causes convection currents in the mantle, these convection currents slowly move the crust around, in some places causing crust to be destroyed, in some places new crust is made.

Q

continental drift theory

A

the theory created stating that all our continents used to be one big land mass. convection currents and movement of the crust caused the land mass to move apart slowly, forming the continents we have today. evidence of this is that fossils of the same species have been found on continents far apart, e.g. Africa and America. also evidence for this is that our continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Q

destructive plate boundary

A

when a continental plate and an oceanic plate collide, the more dense oceanic plate gets sub ducted and destroyed in the mantle causing magma to rise up.

Q

constructive plate boundary

A

two plates move apart from each other, causing a gap to appear. lava rises up to fill this gap, this creates new land.

Q

collision boundary

A

two continental crusts move together, as neither is more dense neither can get sub ducted. this causes sedimentary rock between the crusts to be forced upwards, causing fold mountains to form.

Q

conservative boundary

A

at a conservative margin, two plates try to move side by side however friction causes them to stick. eventually the friction builds up so much that a catastrophic slip occurs, causing an earthquake.

Q

how are fold mountains formed?

A

at a collision margin, two continental crusts move together causing sedimentary rock to be forced up between them in turn forming fold mountains.

Q

a trench formed at a destructive boundary at the point where the oceanic crust gets sub ducted.
