Geodesy Flashcards
What types of crust are there?
Oceanic ( 0- 10, mainly silica and magnesium)
Continental ( 0-75, mainly silica and aluminum)
Mantle fast facts:
Composed of mainly iron and magnesium
2900 km thick
Consists of;l
Lithosphere - immediately below Moho apart of crust
Asthenosphere- contains molten, always at or near melting point
Lower mantle - mostly silicon magnesium and oxygen
Upper mantle- olivine and pyroxene, calcium and aluminum
Outer core fast facts
- liquid and made of nickel and iron
- earths magnetic field controlled by this
- transition space between outer core and mantle is called Gutenberg discontinuity
Inner core
Made up of solid iron and a little nickel
Unattached to the mantle and is suspended in the molten outer core
Has extreme temperatures
Transition region between outer core and inner core is called Lehman discontinuity.
What is geodesy
The study of the size and shape of the earth
