Earthquakes And Tsunamis Flashcards
What are they caused by?
1) plate movement
2) volcanic activity
3) man made activity
4) Plutonic activity
What is an Earthquake?
An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the earth’s crust caused by the release of built up pressure.
Why do they occur mainly at plate boundaries?
They occur mainly at plate boundaries because friction causes pressure to build up as plates get stuck against each other. the release of pressure results in earthquakes. the most active zones in the earth.
What is the difference between the focus and the epicenter?
The focus is the point below the surface where the earthquake originates where as the epicenter is the point on the surface directly above the focus.
What 2 scales are earthquakes measure by?
richter- measures magnitude ( size or how large an area is affected)
Mercalli- measure the intensity ( damage caused)
Primary effects are …
Secondary effects are;
Factors affecting earthquake intensity?
What is a tsunamis?
A tsunami is a series of huge waves that can cause great devastation and loss of life when they strike a coast.
