Geodesy Flashcards
Geodesy
Science of Earth measurement
Earth is what shape?
A spheroid or elipsoid
Latitude
East to west coordinates (x,y)
Longitude
North to south coordinates
Graticule
Combination of latitude & longitude with 20 degree spacing
Ellipsoid
Smooth, regular, geometric, used to compute coordinates
Geoid
Most precise and accurate, approximates mean sea level
Datum
Defines the size and shape of Earth and some tie point that fixes the ellipsoid
Horizontal Datum
Specifies locations in terms of geodetic latitude and longitude computed from a reference ellipsoid
Vertical Datum
Determines elevation regarding to the mean sea level and relates to the geoid
Coordinate system
Numeric system for specifying location measurements and provides the means to measure distance, direction, and size
Geographical coordinate system
Latitude and longitude are angular values
GCS
Defines shape of the Earth
PCS
Used to show the 3D Earth into 2D flat sheet
SPC
State plane coordinate system- several zones per state
