Population density
the number of people per square kilometer of land
Population distribution
how a population is spread throughout a
country or region
Development
a process of change that affects people’s lives. It should involve an
improvement in the quality of life as perceived by the people undergoing change.
HIC
high-income country – World Bank category for countries with a GNI per capita
of over $12,536
LIC
Low-income country - World Bank category for countries with a GNI per capita
of lower than $1, 035
MIC
middle-income country – all between the above two!
GNI
gross national income
Core and periphery
the concept of a more developed core surrounded by a less
developed periphery
Migration
the movement of people from one area to another
Internal migration
migration within a country
Megacity
a city with population of over 10 million people
Urban
built up areas with higher population density (cities!)
Rural
countryside regions with low population density (farming communities, villages and towns)
Urbanization
the process by which the % of the urban population in a region increases
Hukou
a household registration system used in China which categorises people
depending on where they’re from, and whether it is urban or rural.
Population momentum
The phenomenon whereby populations continue to grow
despite a large fall in fertility rate, often to below
replacement level
the number of births a women should have in their lifetime to replace the current population. it is 2.1 per women.
Doubling time
The length of time it takes for a population to double in
size, assuming the natural increase remains constant.
Population projections
Predictions about future population based on trends in
fertility, mortality, and migration.
Crude birth rate
The number of live births per 1,000 people per year.
Crude death rate
The number of deaths per 1,000 people per year.
Natural Increase
The number of extra people in a country each year caused
by the extra number of births than deaths (CBR – CDR)
Infant mortality rate
The number of deaths under one year of age among the
live births in a given geographical area during a given
year, per 1,000 live births
Active population
The number of people in a country of working age, usually
15 to 64 years
