Pt. Defiance
West entrance to comm bay. Terminates in a very prominent dirt bluff 160ft high. A light is just west of the point.
Pt. Defiance park
Wooded along its NE shore for 3.8nm from the end of the point
Dash Pt.
At East entrance to comm bay. There is a restaurant at the foot of the long pier which extends out from the north side of the point.
Browns Pt.
Marked by a 38ft light shown from a 35ft white concrete house.
Commencement bay
Entrance lies 18nm south of alki Pt. The bay is 2.5 nm in length, easy of access and free of dangers. Log storage grounds are off the NE shore
Tacoma
The second city in size and importance to the sound. Occupies the S and SW shores of Commencement bay.
Hylebos waterway
The farthest north and west waterway in the bay. A lighted buoy is off the shoal on the N side of the entrance and a private light is on the south side at the NW end of pier 25. Has prominent bascule bridge over waterway.
Blair waterway
Is just south and East of Hylebos waterway. The entrance is marked by a private lighted buoy in the SW side. Has many shipping terminals and cranes.
Sitcum waterway
NE of Puyallup waterway. The port of Tacoma’s pier 7 is on the east side and Matsons terminal on the west side. A private light is just off the NW end of pier 7, it marks the east side of the entrance to the sitcum waterway.
Puyallup waterway
NE of St. Paul waterway. Discharges the water of the Puyallup river. The waterway has shoaled to such an extent that it cannot be used commercially. A lighted buoy marks the shoal area extending 500yds to the NW of the entrance. Has prominent fixed highway bridge over river
Middle and St. Paul waterways
The inner parts of both waterways have shoaled and not navigable, there is no deep draft traffic. St. Paul waterway is used for log storage by the large paper mill which occupies the land on the NE side
Thea foss waterway
The Eastern most waterway at the head of the bay. A light is on the east side of the entrance. 2 deep draft wharves and many oil storage tanks are on the east side. Has prominent vertical lift bridge over waterway
Measure mile
A nautical measured mile is about midway between Ruston and Tacoma. True course 132-05 marked by 4 markers
