Gentics Flashcards
Genotype
Genetic makeup
Eg)Bb
Eg)BB
Phenotype
Physical appearance
In breeding
Mating of close relatives
Can be used to get fast improvements but the positive and negative characteristics are enhanced
Line breeding
Mating of distance relatives
Subjective
Things we can see
Eg) udder attachment, feet and legs, frames
Objective
Things we measure
Eg) milk production, weight
Pure breeding
homozygous (breeds true)
Cross breeding
heterozygous (hybrid vigour)
Heritability
Heritability – likelihood of characteristics being passed on
Mutation
Mutation – dramatically different from what is expected genetically
Abnormality
Abnormality – similar to mutation, only it is cased by something in the environment (Eg Siamese twins)
Recessive gene
Recessive gene – overshadowed by dominate gene
Dominate gene
Dominate gene – one gene overshadows the other
Chromosome
Chromosome – 46 chromosomes. Expect reproductive cells only 23
