What is Iconography? (In terms of Genre)
Iconography is the theory that the genre of a film can be identified by key or iconic images
What is Setting? (In terms of Genre)
Setting is the theory that some genres have a distinct location or time period associated with them
What is Narrative? (In terms of Genre)
Narrative is the theory that you can define the genre of a film by using its story structure and narrative devices
What is Character? (In terms of Genre)
Character is the theory that the genre of a movie can be defined by a character’s outfit, attitude and interests
What is Style? (In terms of Genre)
Style is the theory that the genre of a film can be identified by the visual and audio techniques used
What is theme? (In terms of Genre)
Theme is the theory that the genre of the film can be defined by the film’s characteristic themes
What to expect from the 6 Genres
Horror - Gothic / Sinister Settings
Western - Cattle, Horses, Cacti, Tumbleweeds
Action - Chases, Fighting Scenes, Explosions, Weapons
Rom Com - Make overs, symbolic rain, glamorous places
Sci-Fi - Spaceships, Time machines, Futuristic scenery
Crime - Dangerous cities, Detectives, Gang Members
Horror Definition
Films that explore the theme of mortality to inflict fear, horror and terror to the audience. The plot usually involves violent death, supernatural occurrences, mental illness and so on
Western Definition
Films that are set in the US in the mid to late 19th century, usually following the theme of 19th century Mississippi. These films usually comprise of outlaws, sheriffs and native Americans as characters, so they are often easy to define
Action / Adventure definition
Films that are focused on a dangerous and stunt driven narrative that can excite, humour or scare an audience all at once. They usually consist of bounty hunters, soldiers or superheroes as well as their enemies and supporters
What is HYBRID GENRE?
Hybrid Genre is a mixture of two or more Genres
What is a STEREOTYPE?
A stereotype is a character in a film that has a well known over simplified idea of the character’s beliefs or maturity
