Genomes and Evolution Flashcards
Genomics is the study of 4 things…
- Gene sequences
- Mechanisms of gene activity
- Study between genetic and non-genetic factors
- Comparisons of different species
Whats a genome?
The organisms entire DNA sequence
What is the C value paradox?
When more DNA does not mean a more complex organism
There is NO relationship between
Genome size and organism complexity
What does homologous mean?
Genes that are related through evolution
What are gene families that are commonly found in Eukaryotes?
Genes that come from a common ancestor but have time to diverge from each other after duplication occurred
What are orthologs?
Homologous genes that are found in 2 different species that evolved from a common ancestor
What are paralogs?
Two genes within a single organism that are homologous and arose from a duplication in the past
True or False: Sometimes the new copies of a gene evolve new functions
True
Ex: When human angionin diverged from (ribonuclease)
What are unique sequences?
Found only once in the genome
