Genome Projects Flashcards

1
Q

What is the importance of gene sequencing projects?

A

Gene sequencing projects are important as they can lead to medical advances such as allowing us to identify which genes are more active/switched on in certain diseases. Furthermore, genome sequencing allows us to trace evolutionary relationships between species.

Q

Describe the nature of the proteome.

A

-The proteome is the resulting network of proteins from the genome.
-There can be different types of proteome: cellular or organism.

Q

How can the genome and proteome of simple organisms be determined?

A

(1) The majority of prokaryotes have just one section of DNA that is not associated with histones.
(2) There are no non-coding portions of DNA which are typical of eukaryotic cells

Q

How can the genome and proteome of complex organisms be determined?

A

The problem in complex organisms is translating knowledge of the genome into the proteome. This is due to many non-coding genes being present. A human proteome project is underway.
