Genocide
The intended wiping out of a whole group or part of a group of people based on a particular aspect of their identity, such as religion or ethnicity.
Raphael Lemkin
Created the term ‘genocide’ and lobbied the UN to treat it as a crime
Identity
The different aspects which make up a person, such as gender, age, religion etc.
Membership and belonging
‘we’ and ‘they’ - what are the different groups in a society and what are the requirements for ‘membership’. Which people are not accepted?
Outcast
Somebody not accepted as a member of a group
Bias
Having a one-sided opinion, favouring one thing more than another
MacPherson Inquiry
a public inquiry into the police investigation of Stephen Lawrence’s murder, which found the police to be ‘institutionally racist’.
Ubiquitous
Present, appearing or found everywhere
Omnipresence
being everywhere (often used about God) (always present)
Omnipotence
all powerful (often used about God)
Good Samaritan
Somebody that hep someone in need
Double jeopard
A law that forbids the trying of a person more than once for the same crime. This law was overturned in England and Wales in 2003 for serious crimes. However, it still applies in the USA.
