SMC
System Management Control:
Low level management (communication) subsystem in intel-based Macintosh system.
Resetting SMC
- Removable batteries:
remove battery + hold power button 5 seconds - Batteries you should not remove:
Shift + Control + Option - iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini:
Shut down + unplug + wait 15 secs + attach + wait 5 secs + power up
Shortcut: Force Quit
Command + Option + Escape

NVRAM and PRAM
Your Mac stores certain settings in a special memory area even if it is turned off. On Intel-based Macs, this is stored in memory known as NVRAM; on PowerPC-based Macs, this is stored in memory known as PRAM.
What’s stored in NVRAM / PRAM?
- Speaker volume
- Screen resolution
- Startup disk selection
- Recent kernel panic information
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
- Shut down
- Reboot
- Command + option + P + R
- Hold down until you hear the startup sound for the second time
POST
Power On Self Test.
Error codes determines if RAM is physically damaged, incorrect, or not installed.
POST: Error Codes
- Detects No RAM or not within specs:
Screen will remain black but the power LED on the front of the computer will blink once per second to signal the error. - RAM passes POST but still cannot be used by OS.
Displays gray screen, sound three tones and blink the power LED on the front three times, pause, and repeat the blinking until the computer turns off.
Startup Tones:
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat
No RAM installed
Startup Tones:
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones
RAM does not pass data integrity check
Startup Tones:
1 long tone when holding down the power button
Firmware upgrade in process.
Startup Tones:
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones
Firmware restoration from CD in process.

- Black screen, power LED on - POST or BootROM failure
- Flashing power LED once per second - bad RAM, no RAM
- Three flashes, a pause, and three more flashes (occurs continuously) - marginal RAM
