Genetics Part 1 Flashcards
alleles
variations of a gene
dominant allele
expressed even when paired with a recessive allele
recessive allele
only visible when paired with another recessive allele
Genetics History
Gregor Mendel used peas bc…
- ) they had a short generation time
- ) had polymorphic traits
- ) mating was easy to control
- ) large # of seeds
- ) inexpensive & easy to grow
true breeding
produce pure lines/ strains for each trait
Generations
P: true breeding
F1: hybrids
F3: both types; 3:1 ratio
Mendel’s Law of Segregation
2 gene pairs segregate into different gametes during formation of eggs and sperm
What is the purpose of a test cross?
to determine the genotype of an individual with a dominant phenotype. You cross the individual with the unknown genotype with a homo recessive phenotype and based on the ratios you can determine the genotype
Dihybrid crosses
2 separate traits in a single cross. F1 generation shows dominant phenotypes for each trait, F1 self fertilizes, F2 shows all 4 possible phenotypes in 9:3:3:1 ratio
Principle of Independent Assortment
2 copies of each gene segregate into gametes independently of the 2 copies of another gene
Product rule and Sum rule
2 probabilities multiplied, probability of one event added to probability of second event
