Q

Q

Embryo

A

The fertilised egg then divides a number of times and the tiny group of cells moves down the falllopian tubes to the uterus

This group of cells settles into the lining of the uterus and continues to divide to form an embryo

Q

Pregnancy

A

The averge length of a human pregnancy is 40 weeks

As the embryo develops in the uterus it is protectected inside a bag of fluid called amniotic fluid. This fluid provides a cushion for the embroyo

17
Q

Umbilical cord

A

Joins the embryo to the placenta

18
Q

Placenta

A

Is rich in blood vessals. Its here at the placenta that food and oxygen from the mothers blood pass into the babys blood.
Also wastes such as carbon dioxide pass from the babys blood into the mothers.

19
Q

Birth

A

The birth of a baby begins to contract when the uterus muscles start to contract. This is called labour. The bag of amniotic fluids bursts “waters break” and further contractions push the baby out usally head first throught the vagina. The umbillical cord is cut and the placenta (after birth ) comes out after.

20
Q

Lactation

A

The mother may choose to breastfeed the infant
The production of breast milk is called lactation
The first three days is called colostrum- very nutrituis , and helps protect the baby from infection

21
Q

Family planning

A

To control the number of children you need to control the number of times fertilasition takes place

Natural methods of conteception aim to detect the day ovulation takes place and avoid intercourse during the fertile period

22
Q

Artificial methods of contreception

A

An example of this is a condom which prevents the sperm from entering the vagina

Another example is the contraceptive pill which prevents ovulation
Its important to realise no method is 100% reliable

23
Q

DNA

A

Deoxyribonucleic acid

24
Q

Genes

A

chemicals found on chromosomes that pass on information from parents to children

25
Q

Chromosomes

A

made of protein + DNA

These carry genes
