Genetics Flashcards
Gene
Sequence of DNA that encodes to a protein
Gene expression
Process of creating protein from the gene
Genome
Complete set of genetic material in cell or organism
Genomics
Study of the structure, function, evolution and mapping of genomes
What are proteins made up of?
Amino acids
What is a DNA sequence?
Instructions for which amino acids to use when making a protein
What is DNA?
Molecule that contains genetic information for development and functioning of an organism
What does DNA do?
Stores instructions allowing the organism to survive, reproduce and develop
How many chromosomes do you inherit from each parent?
23
How can genetic disease arise?
A defective protein e.g haemoglobin in sickle cell anaemia
Think of a recipe: if the recipe is wrong the cake will always come out wrong
3 ways mutations can happen
- Inherited
- Defects in DNA replication
- Induced through environmental factors
