Genetically Modified Crops Flashcards
1
Q
Why are crops genetically modified?
A
- To make them resistant to viruses, insects or herbicides
2
Q
What is Genetic Engineering?
A
- A useful gene is cut from Plant 1’s chromosome using enzymes
- Enzymes are used to cut Plant 2’s chromosome
- The useful gene is inserted into Plant 2
3
Q
What are the positive aspects of GM?
A
- Increase the yield of crop
- There aren’t often any problems
- GM crops can be engineered to contain nutrients missing from people’s diets
4
Q
What are the negative aspects of GM?
A
- Some say it will reduce farmland biodiversity
- Not everyone thinks it is safe
- Transplanted genes may get out into the natural environment
