Genetic Technology Flashcards
1
Q
Gel electrophoresis:
A
- Seperate different m.s in analysis of proteins and DNA.
- Placing mix of agarose gel and applying an electrical field.
2
Q
Movement of charges m.s in gel depends on 3 factors:
A
- Net (overall) charge: neg. charged move to anode (+), pos. to cathode (-). Highly charged m.s move faster.
- Size: smaller m.a move faster through gel.
- Composition of gel: Size of “pores” in gel determines speed which proteins and fragments of DNA move.
3
Q
Applications of genetic engineering:
A
- Production of human insulin.
- GM crops.
- Pest resistance.
- Herbicide resistance.
